Commonly treated disorders include herniated discs and other disc diseases, arthritic spurs, scoliosis and back pain problems.

The Cleveland Clinic Center for Spine Health physicians are on the cutting-edge of conservative (nonsurgical), and surgical care. Every attempt is made to first treat the patient conservatively, without surgery. This can include rehabilitation therapy, use of devices such as braces, and medication management. When surgery is recommended, patients are treated by Spine Institute surgeons who are highly skilled in conventional surgical techniques, major spinal reconstruction and newer minimally invasive techniques.

Medical Spine Specialist
The medical spine specialist is an important member of your spine care team. The medical spine specialist is trained in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of back and neck disorders. While medical spine specialists are experts trained and experienced in spine care, they often work in other medical areas as well, such as rheumatology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, internal medicine, or family medicine.

Expertise
Spine medicine specialists have specific skills related to the evaluation and management of spinal disorders, including experience in evaluating and interpreting diagnostic studies, as well as performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as epidural injections and facet joint blocks.

The Medical Spine Specialist
Spine medicine is an emerging medical specialty with a specialized training program. Generally, medical spine specialists complete additional training in spine care following completion of their primary specialty training. In the Cleveland Clinic Center for Spine Health, we train three to four spine medicine specialists each year in a one-year program.

Comprehensive Care
A medical spine specialist evaluates and treats a full range of spinal disorders. This evaluation includes a history and physical examination, appropriate diagnostic tests, and the formulation of a treatment plan. When needed, a medical spine specialist will work with appropriate surgical specialists, as well as specialists in other related areas. These include specialists in chronic pain management, radiology, and neurology.

At Cleveland Clinic the medical spine specialist is for most patients the first person who evaluates and treats their spine disorder. Most patients are treated successfully within the medical spine area, or with recommendations to the patient’s referring doctor. When necessary, patients requiring surgical care are referred to a surgical spine specialist. In some cases, these patients return to the medical spine specialist for additional management following their surgical procedure.

When to See a Medical Spine Specialist
Many back disorders are self-limited and go away on their own within a short time or can be evaluated and treated successfully by an individual’s primary care doctor. However, for severe or persistent pain, particularly when it radiates to the legs — with or without more serious symptoms such as numbness or weakness — evaluation by a medical spine specialist is recommended.
