Millions of people suffer from particularly high or low moods, or both. Moods that continue for an extended period of time and result in significant distress at work and home, or interfere with daily activities – signal the presence of a mood disorder. Mood disorders may appear out of nowhere, or may be triggered by a traumatic or life changing event such as the loss of a loved one, moving, the birth of a child, or a job change. While feelings of depression or high levels of excitement may seem like appropriate reactions to certain situations, mood changes that continue for an extended period of time, or result in significant distress at work or home require professional help.
Cleveland Clinic and Lutheran Hospital offer a unique program intended for adults with primary mood disorders such as major depression and bipolar disorder. It is the first program in northeast Ohio to offer both inpatient and outpatient programs dedicated to the treatment of mood disorders. The goal of the program is to provide patients with primary mood disorders, particularly those with higher levels of functioning, the highly specialized treatments they require in a setting conducive to their needs.
